The Instituto Francés of Madrid continues its Summer Cinema season with the screening next Wednesday at 22:00 of the film El sucesor (Le successeur), by Xavier Legrand. Tickets can be purchased at this link. Screening in French with Spanish subtitles.
Starring Marc-André Grondin, The Successor tells the story of how the new artistic director of a prestigious fashion house in Paris, Elia Barnès, learns that his father, whom he has not seen for many years, has just died of a heart attack and travels to Quebec to settle the inheritance. The young designer discovers that he has inherited something far worse than his father’s fragile heart. The Institut’s Café will remain open until the start of the screening, offering early dinners with snacks and cocktails!
In El sucesor, the film focuses on the issue of male violence. It explores how men can be the executioners of their fellow men. Today, patriarchy is perceived as a regime that subjugates women and children. But what is less obvious and more hidden, because of its transmissible and transgenerational aspect, is that it also crushes men, brothers and sons. The sacredness of the blood relationship makes it indestructible and unbreakable in the eyes of society. Axioms such as “father to son”, “like father, like son” and “in the name of father and son…” remain deeply rooted in the mentality.
