A total of 28 students from Ukraine took the Spanish diploma exam (DELE) last Friday thanks to the collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes and the Red Cross aid program in Guardamar del Segura (Alicante).
The exam, which took place at the El Limonar International School in San Miguel de Salinas - integrated into the Instituto Cervantes network of examination centers - brought together 35 people, including Ukrainians and other nationalities, aged between 30 and 60 years old and of which 67% were women and 33% men.
All of them need the DELE A2 certificate to process Spanish nationality by residence. This diploma accredits a basic knowledge of the Spanish language, one of the requirements for obtaining nationality in our country.
As a result of the war in Ukraine, the Guardamar Red Cross received a large number of people from that country, which increased the number and frequency of Spanish classes. Currently, they teach nine groups of different levels, attended by all types of nationalities, which add up to a total of 133 students this last year.
The call that was held on Friday in all exam centers around the world was the fourth of 2024 and there are still three calls pending for this year: those for September, October and November. DELE diplomas are official titles accrediting the degree of competence and mastery of the Spanish language, awarded by the Cervantes Institute on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Spain.
In May 2022, the Instituto Cervantes signed a collaboration agreement with the Spanish Red Cross to facilitate the teaching and dissemination of Spanish culture and language to Ukrainian refugees. That was the first agreement of the institution of Spanish cultural diplomacy to promote support and Spanish teaching programs for Ukrainian refugees as another element for their integration.
Last April, the Instituto Cervantes signed a similar agreement with the NGO Association in Action and Cooperation for Ukraine (ACU) to collaborate in the teaching and dissemination of Spanish culture and language among Ukrainian refugees.
