The Percussionist returns to the Teatro del Barrio in Madrid from July 16 to 21, spreading African culture through music and dance.
Gorsy Edú is an actor, dancer, choreographer, playwright and musician. He arrived in Spain, from Equatorial Guinea, in the 90s and this is his best-known work.
The show aims to spread, through music and dance, the culture of its country. With it, the artist has traveled through Africa and Latin America, and during confinement he made a particular version from the balcony of his house, establishing a bond with his neighbors in Lavapiés.
In The Percussionist, an elderly musician instructs his grandson; Through music he transmits ancient wisdom and philosophies. Time passes in the village with the boy immersed in its traditions. Fulfilling the African proverb “the days that make children grow are the same days that make old people old,” the grandfather falls ill. As a result of his old age he begins to lose his vision.
The desire to cure his grandfather makes the boy make the decision to leave the village and emigrate to the big cities in search of a remedy. The young man leaves for Europe, “Yes beyeng”, a world unknown to him, carrying with him only the knowledge of his people locked in ancestral melodies and rhythms.
