From 12 to 28 July, the Sala Margarita Xirgu of the Teatro Español in Madrid will host the play Othelo (termina mal), a comic adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy, adapted, translated and directed by Gabriel Chamé Buendía. Tickets can be purchased at this link.

The cast is made up of four performers (Matías Bassi, Elvira Gómez, Nicolás Gentile and Agustín Soler), specialists in physical theatre, clown and burlesque. Through physical play, close to the absurdity of clowning and far from everyday realism, they faithfully interpret the verses of William Shakespeare.

From the sinister irony generated by the comic gag, Othelo (termina mal) investigates the relationship between the tragic and the comic. In the words of Gabriel Chamé, “the comic is tragic and so tragic that it is comic. I investigate, without solemnity, the relationship between the tragic and the comic, as keys to classical and contemporary theatre”. In this adaptation of the classic, the artists will question some current issues, already present, according to the director and translator, in Shakespeare’s text, such as “love, loyalty, racism, ambition, domestic violence, envy, jealousy, scientific coldness and/or blood belief. Othelo is an evil mirage in which, if you get close, you see nothing but sand. Or your own tragicomedy.
