Sánchez congratulates Starmer on the “historic victory of Labor” in the British elections

The Diplomat The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, yesterday congratulated the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Labor Party Keir Starmer, who won by an overwhelming majority in the general elections this past Thursday. “Congratulations on the historic victory of Labor in the elections,” declared Sánchez through the social network X. “Spain and the United Kingdom are friendly countries, partners and allies. We will continue to work together to address global challenges based on the values we share,” he added. Starmer won 412 MPs, the Labor Party's biggest victory since 2001 (and more than double the seats he won in the last election, which the conservative Boris Johnson won). For their part, the conservatives, who have gone from 250 to 121 deputies, have suffered the worst defeat since the founding of the party in 1834 and put an end to fourteen years of Government. Keir Starmer, a 62-year-old lawyer, is the oldest British politician to become prime minister. He was a human rights defender and served as Attorney General for five years. In 2014 he was made a Knight of the British Empire for his work in the Prosecutor's Office. At the moment, Starmer has already announced the composition of his new cabinet. Heading Foreign Affairs (Secretary of State at the Foreign Office, Commonwealth and Development) will be Labour's David Lammy, who has committed to restoring relations with the European Union, defending a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and building ties to the Republican Party of former president and White House candidate Donald Trump. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, yesterday congratulated Lammy on his appointment. “We will work together to continue strengthening Spanish-British relations for the benefit of our citizens and reach the agreement in relation to Gibraltar,” he declared, through X. The High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, has also congratulated Lammy. “In a time of major geopolitical change, the EU and the UK should work together to safeguard shared values and a rules-based international order,” he declared.
