The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, assured yesterday that he does not take the victory of the far-right in France “for granted” and expressed his confidence in the “mobilization of the left” in the second round of the legislative elections.

“I do not take the victory of the extreme right in France for granted,” declared Sánchez during an interview with Cadena SER. “Let’s wait until next Sunday, I have hope in the mobilization of the left,” he added.

In any case, the head of the Executive warned that it is advisable to be “alert” because what is happening in France “is not unrelated to what is happening” in other places. For this reason, and to prevent what has happened in France from happening in Spain, Sánchez assured that the extreme right “is beaten by governing and with progressive measures”, such as the increase in the minimum wage or the reform of unemployment benefits in this legislature, because “it is the best way to combat those hoaxes and disaffection caused by far-right policies.”

The far-right National Agrupation party received the most votes in the first round of the legislative elections this past Sunday, with 33.5% of votes, ahead of the left-wing New Popular Front coalition (28.5%) and the centrist Together for the Republic (22%).
