Until 15 July, the Centro Cultural Espacio Ronda in Madrid is showing the photography exhibition El hilo ancestral (The Ancestral Thread), by Julia Cairo.
With this exhibition, Cairo aims to project a future in which the legacies of Argentina’s indigenous communities are disseminated, promoting cultural diversity. The Impenetrable Chaqueño is presented, in the collective unconscious, as a distant and inaccessible landscape. However, thanks to the work of photojournalist Julia Cairo, visitors can get closer to the natural and cultural richness of this native forest region of more than 40,000 km² in the western Chaco plains, in the northwest of the Argentinean province of Chaco.
The project, which highlights the traditions of the Impenetrable, seeks to promote responsible tourism and enhance the value of the ancestral heritage of the communities that live there.
Throughout The Ancestral Thread, between twenty and forty photographs portraying the unique biodiversity of the native forest (including images of the jaguar, an emblematic species that is in danger of extinction) and scenes from the life of the Wichi and Qom communities will be on display. In addition, the exhibition will feature authentic handicrafts from these communities, a QR for donations to Fundación Manos Abiertas, and the opportunity to purchase copies of the images on display.
Julia Cairo is a professional with more than ten years of experience, known for her sensitive and close-up photography. She began working with El Impenetrable in 2018 with the aim of highlighting the deficiencies and vulnerabilities of the region.
