This afternoon at 18.30, the Iberia Hall of Casa América presents the film Purgatorio (Mexico, 2008), by Roberto Rochín, with a talk afterwards in which the director will be present. Free admission until full capacity is reached. Tickets will be distributed one hour before the screening.
Purgatorio, which will be presented in conjunction with the Instituto Cultural de México, is inspired by three stories by Juan Rulfo: Paso del norte, Un pedazo de noche and Cleotilde, which are a tribute to the writer from Jalisco through the filmmaker’s vision of the Rulfo universe.
At all times,” said director Roberto Rochín, “I have tried to remain faithful and respectful to the vision that Rulfo left captured in each narrative. Purgatorio is a collection of stories about ghosts who lived, died and tell their stories on the threshold of their death; when the door opens to another world, in which one is neither dead nor alive, but in a space created by Rulfo’s literature”.
In the Mexico of the 1950s, the country suffers in its transition to modernity. Bonfilio leaves his family with his father to go north to seek his fortune. The conflicts between them are resolved when Bonfilio returns to say goodbye for the last time. Lucia, a prostitute, and Demetrio, a gravedigger, meet one night when their love will only be complete when Demetrio buries her. Don Julio, an old landowner, is torn between delirium and remorse after the departure of Cleotilde, whom he married for convenience.
The screening will be followed by a discussion between Jorge A. Abascal Andrade, cultural attaché and director of the Instituto Cultural de México, Roberto Rochín and Jaime Vigna, deputy director of the Instituto Cultural de México.
