One of the summer cinemas of reference for the people of Madrid, Cibeles de Cine, will hold its ninth edition from tomorrow Thursday until 12 September in the Galería de Cristal of CentroCentro, a space of the Culture, Tourism and Sport Area of the Madrid City Council, after bringing together more than 33,000 spectators in its 2023 edition.
This year’s poster is a tribute to the 70th anniversary of On the Waterfront (1954), the gripping drama directed by Elia Kazan and winner of eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Leading Actor (Marlon Brando) and Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint). This extraordinary tale of redemption and the underworld will be the first classic film screening of the summer, and can be seen on Sunday 30 June. It will be a tribute to the starring couple as 2024 marks 100 years since their birth.
The opening session on Thursday 27 June will feature a surprise screening. In addition, the line-up for the ninth edition of Cibeles de Cine includes the season’s biggest hits (The Specialist, Back to Black, Fly me to the Moon, Civil War, Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga) to the best independent and auteur films (Past Lives, Priscilla, Blood on our Lips, The Iron Clan, Bikeriders, Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, We’ll Always Have Tomorrow, Evil Doesn’t Exist), as well as national titles (Second Prize, Nina, Robot Dreams), which will be attended by their technical and artistic team. As usual, Saturday will be the day chosen to enjoy family films such as Wonka, The Goonies, Inside Out 2 and The Princess Bride.
The Cinetronik events will be back for yet another summer, combining the pioneering and most influential silent films with a live electronic music soundtrack. The films that can be seen in this avant-garde format will be the documentary The Man with the Camera (1929) set to music by the artist Huma; and The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1920) by the artist Caliza.
In addition to the aforementioned La ley del silencio, other films that will celebrate their anniversary on the Cibeles de Cine screen are It Happened One Night (90th anniversary), Stagecoach (85th anniversary) and The Third Man (75th anniversary).
For the first time, the aerial art exhibition that complements the film and events programme will be photographic. It consists of 24 amazing portraits in giant format of outstanding national and international artists, taken by Jorge Fuembuena, who is also closely linked to the world of the Seventh Art. Fuembuena has an extensive career shooting stills, working as director of photography, as official photographer for the San Sebastian International Film Festival, Malaga Film Festival, Festival du Cinéma Espagnol de Nantes, CineHorizontes Festival du Cinéma Espagnol de Marseille, or collaborating with the Academia de Cine.
The programme until the end of July and online ticket sales are now available at this link. The programme for August and September will be announced soon.
