British citizen Jason McInerney has been sentenced to nine years in prison in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to a serious assault on his former partner in Spain, as reported by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) through the British Embassy in Madrid.

Jason McInerney, 36, from Chessington, and her ex-partner, from Hertfordshire, were in Spain in July 2023 when he stabbed her in the leg. The event occurred in Marbella. The victim, seriously injured and fearing for her life, was thrown from the car at 70 miles per hour and dragged along the road, with McInerney holding her arm. She finally managed to escape from it and alert a citizen who took her to a beach bar, from which they called the Police. McInerney still had his belongings and his passport.

The woman returned to the United Kingdom on July 10 with the support of the British Consulate in Malaga. Hertfordshire Police met her and took her to hospital, where they found she had friction burns, a cut to her leg and fractures to her spine.

McInerney initially remained in Spain, but eventually returned to the UK, although the evidence file remained in the hands of the Spanish prosecution. The prosecution’s international team had to reach an agreement with the Spanish authorities to use the evidence for prosecution in the United Kingdom.

The prosecution relied on security cameras, including those from the pharmacy and beach club where the victim took refuge, medical evidence and accounts from the victim both before the Spanish court and the UK police. McInerney pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm in Spain and the sentence was handed down yesterday at St Albans Crown Court.
