The Diplomat
The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, held a working breakfast yesterday with the Network of Female Ambassadors accredited in Spain, to whom she assured that “investing in defense is investing in peace, freedom and security.”
During the meeting, held at the residence of the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Spain, in Madrid, the minister and about twenty diplomatic representatives from countries from different geographical areas, addressed aspects of defense and security at the current time, such as the war in Ukraine, the important deterrent role of NATO and the Sahel issue.
Furthermore, Minister Robles highlighted the need for women to play an important and fundamental role: “Having women in the armies helps a lot to understand conflicts. An Army with more women responds better to the needs of the population in the places where they are,” she stated, quoted by the Ministry of Defense in a press release.
For her part, the German ambassador in Madrid, Maria Margarete Gosse, highlighted the good collaboration and the “coincidence of values and ideas” between Spain and Germany and made reference to the “difficult situation” internationally, which has led to the collapse of the consensus on non-aggression existing between countries for a long time. “We have to defend ourselves more and be prepared, the situation is not like before and we want to develop all our possibilities to create a better and more peaceful world,” she warned.
In this sense, the head of Defense stated that “it is necessary that we continue in this community of values that is the EU and NATO”, and highlighted that “investing in defense is investing in peace, freedom and security.”
Likewise, Robles emphasized the need for a ceasefire in the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis and the recognition of the Palestinian State, and called for “respect for African countries and their own decisions.”
