The former president of the European Central Bank (2011-2019) and president of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy (2021-2022), Mario Draghi, will collect the Charles V European Prize next Friday, June 14 at 11 hours in the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste in a solemn ceremony presided over by His Majesty King Felipe VI, honorary president of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation.
The Vice President of the European Central Bank, Luis de Guindos, will attend the Award ceremony; the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the former president of the government of Spain, José María Aznar, among other authorities.
Around twenty diplomatic representatives from European and Ibero-American embassies will also be present, such as Germany, Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Cyprus, Croatia, El Salvador, Slovenia, Finland, France, Italy, Lithuania, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Ukraine, in addition to the ambassador of Spain in Italy and the consul general of Portugal.
Other personalities who will accompany the winner are the members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, Ramón Jáuregui, Gustaff Janssens, Enrique Moradiellos, Monica Luisa Macovei and Marcelino Oreja, who also received the Carlos V European Award in 2017.
The jury of the 17th edition of the Charles V European Prize has decided to award the award to the Italian economist for “his leadership at the head of the European Central Bank that made it possible to face one of the biggest crises that the European Union has experienced since its creation, launching a series of forceful and risky measures that managed, in the midst of a recession in the European economy, to maintain the strength of the euro and the autonomy of the ECB, as well as save the single currency, allowing Europe to emerge stronger from said crisis. It is also worth highlighting the exemplary manner. through which it has promoted European ethical principles as central axes of economic governance, highlighting its extraordinary capacity, foresight and dialogue at the service of a united Europe, as well as its attention and commitment to youth as a guarantor of the future of Europe, tasks that go beyond the strictly economic sphere”.
This is the third time that the Charles V European Prize has gone to an Italian personality. In 2016, the Italian professor Sofia Corradi, better known as Mamma Erasmus, received it for having launched the European Union’s Erasmus program and for her work in favor of academic mobility. In 2018, the Award jury recognized the work of the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, “for his work in favor of a more competitive Europe that guarantees an effective model of sustainable and strategic growth.”
The award ceremony of the XVII Carlos V European Prize has the collaboration of National Heritage and the Government of Extremadura and the institutional support of the European Parliament. In addition, it has the support of Foods of Extremadura, Extremadura Avante, Iberdrola, Telefónica and Canal Extremadura, which will broadcast the solemn event live on the internet and via satellite.
