The diplomat and writer Luis Martínez Montes will be the new ambassador of Spain in Kazakhstan, as The Diplomat learned from diplomatic sources.
Martínez Montes, who entered the Diplomatic Career in 1998, will replace Jorge Urbiola, who was in charge of the Embassy since August 2021.
The future ambassador in Astana was already stationed in Kazakhstan between 1999 and 2002, when the capital was in Almaty, where he held the second position in charge of the Spanish Embassy.
Since 2019, Luis Martínez Montes was a counselor at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union, in Brussels. Previously, he served in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the United Nations in New York, and in the Embassy to the OSCE, in Vienna.
In Madrid, he has been a member of the Inter-American Affairs advisor in the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Ibero-American Affairs, as well as in 2016 executive advisor for Parliamentary Affairs in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Martínez Montes has combined his work as a diplomat with an intense activity as a writer of historical essays, among them “Spain, a global history”, “The great adventure of Spanish diplomacy” and “Illuminated worlds”. The global history of Spain in twelve illuminated codices.
