The book tells how Mimo works as an apprentice with a small-time but talented sculptor. Viola Orsini is an heiress of a prestigious family, but she has too much ambition to resign herself to the role of wife that has been assigned to her from the cradle. The apprentice and the aristocrat were not meant to meet. But when they meet, they vow never to part. Mimo and Viola can neither live together nor stay apart for long. Bound by a fierce attraction, they go through years of fury when Italy falls to fascism. Mimo takes revenge on fate, but what good is glory to him if it means losing Viola?
