Under the slogan Sport illuminates the Fair, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic has begun its agenda of special activities in the framework of the 83rd Madrid Book Fair with the aim of highlighting and supporting literature.
The initial event took place last Tuesday, chaired by Ambassador Juan Bolívar Díaz and with the presence of Ambassador Consort Ada Wiscovitch Carlo, the Consul General in Madrid, Miguel Vásquez Peña, and a large representation of the Dominican community in the Spanish capital. The cultural counsellor of the Embassy, Luisa Auffant, acted as master of ceremonies.
The Dominican Republic’s calendar at the Madrid Book Fair was inaugurated with the presentation of the work Hojas Sueltas, by the writer Juan Manuel Prida Busto -economist and ex-diplomat-, in the Library Hall of the Fundación Gregorio Marañón. It should be noted that Prida Busto won the National Literature Prize, Short Story genre, in 1990.
Later, Jeanette Alfau, lawyer and director of the Instituto Duartiano, Madrid Branch, gave a conference entitled Women in Dominican Independence: Legal Status in the International Framework. In her presentation she referred to the role of women from the Napoleonic Code to the present day, paying tribute to outstanding Dominican women such as: Manuela Diez, Concepción Bona, Josefa Pérez, Ana Valverde and Juana Saltitopa, among others. During the event, the Instituto Duartiano distributed the following booklets: Heroism and Identity, Duarte Liberator, Romantic and Poet; Juan Pablo Duarte, Writings; Duarte and Patriotic Symbology; Duarte’s Ideology; Rosa Duarte, Trinitarian Heroine; and Women of the Trinitarian and the Restoration of Independence.
The presentation of the Guide for Media Coverage of Gender Violence cases, by Ramieri Delgadillo -Dominican journalist, activist and consultant in strategic communication. Master of Advanced Studies in Political Communication at the Complutense University of Madrid-. A tool that seeks to provide practical and ethical ways to help the media address cases of gender-based violence in a respectful, sensitised and effective manner.
