Yolanda Díaz calls on Sánchez for Government to recognise Palestinian state on Tuesday

The Diplomat

The second vice-president and Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, yesterday demanded that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, demand that the Council of Ministers tomorrow, Tuesday, recognise the Palestinian state.

The demand was made by the leader of Sumar during an election rally in Tarragona, in which, at the beginning, the representative of the Palestinian Community in Catalonia Ahmed Ibrahem went on stage and gave Diaz a Palestinian scarf.

The Second Vice-President acknowledged the work carried out by Sánchez to try to get other countries to join the initiative, which the President of the Government announced he wants to make a reality before July. But, she added: “Let’s not let another day go by. There is no reason why our country should not recognise the State of Palestine”.

Yolanda Díaz , denounced that “children are being murdered in Palestine” and called for effective measures to end the war in Gaza.

Sumar has been demanding that its partner in government take the decision to recognise Palestine as a state, and on 19 April issued a video in which all the ministers of the coalition took part, calling on Sánchez to move “from words to deeds”.

The prime minister toured several European capitals in April, seeking support for his plan to recognise the Palestinian state soon, but many of the leaders he met with indicated that they did not consider this to be the most appropriate moment. Only Ireland’s prime minister, Simon Harris, seems to support Sánchez’s urgency.

The head of the executive announced that he will propose to the Congress of Deputies the recognition of Palestine as a state, something that, for now, has not been done formally, so it is difficult to meet the demands of his partner Sumar.

In any case, in the face of a foreseeable rejection by the PP and Vox, Sánchez intends to go ahead with his plan, since the recognition of a state is a matter for the government.
