The Diplomat
The Qatari Ambassador Abdalla Al-Hamar will participate, accompanying the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi, in the meeting with the ministers of the Arab Contact Group organised by Spain tomorrow Wednesday in Madrid on the occasion of the recognition of the Palestinian state by the governments of Spain, Ireland and Norway.
With this event, Ambassador Al-Hamar will end his mission in Spain after four years, during which he has given a notable boost to bilateral relations in all areas, according to the Qatari Embassy in a press release.
Shortly after his arrival, the ambassador had to face the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in which he got involved by allocating 100,000 euros to the purchase of health material that he donated to hospitals, old people’s homes and shelters in the Community of Madrid.
During his mandate, Abdalla Al-Hamar managed to raise the level of relations between Qatar and Spain, as confirmed by the official visit of Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the first in eleven years, during which the Emir announced the investment of €5 billion in Spain for long-term bilateral projects. These projects were materialised during the meeting held recently in Doha between the Chairman of Cofides, José L. Curbelo, and the Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr Al Thani.
In addition, during the participation of the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Thani, in the Qatar-Spain Economic Forum, organised by the CEOE and attended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, a dozen agreements were signed between the two countries.
The 2022 World Cup was a challenge for the ambassador, whose goal was to change the perception of Qatar in Spain from a country incapable of hosting a World Cup to a destination with enormous potential to organise global sporting events. He also deployed remarkable active diplomacy to eliminate Qatar’s image as a financier of terrorism and to help its recognition as a mediator in international conflicts, such as the current one in the Gaza Strip.
