The Plenary Session of Congress yesterday again urged President Pedro Sánchez to revoke his “unilateral” stance on Western Sahara and reverse his support for the plan proposed by Morocco for the former Spanish colony, all with the vote to favor of Sumar, the Government’s minority partner.
The decision was adopted in a PP motion as a result of an urgent questioning to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, in which the Government’s foreign policy was criticized, and with a vote carried out point by point.
The PSOE vote against the motion did not prevent the PP from achieving its objective, because it obtained the support of Sumar and the usual partners of the Executive, to urge Sánchez to “recover” Spain’s historical position of active neutrality regarding the Sahara dispute. Occidental, “rejecting and nullifying the unilateral position adopted by the President of the Government in March 2022.”
In addition, Congress demanded that the Government make public the calendar agreed with Morocco to set the date for the reopening of the commercial customs in Melilla and the opening of the one in Ceuta, although this time without the support of PSOE, Sumar and PNV, and with the abstention of the rest of the coalition partners.
