Next Monday at 8 p.m., the Theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid will screen the film The Last Summer, directed by Catherine Breillat and starring Léa Drucker, Olivier Rabourdin and Samuel Kirchner.

The film, which will be released in Madrid on Friday 24 May, will be screened in its original version with Spanish subtitles. You must book at this link to attend the screening.

Recently married to Pierre (Olivier Rabourdin), Anne (Léa Drucker) moves with her two adopted daughters to his beautiful estate, where she discovers his 17-year-old stepson, Théo (Samuel Kirchner). The self-assured teenager seduces Anne and she falls for him. But she is unable to put an end to the affair, and Théo in turn falls under the spell of passion, which he reveals to his father. Catherine Breillat breaks with morality in this love thriller starring a dazzling Léa Drucker.

A remake of May el-Toukhy’s Danish film Dronnigen (2019), The Last Summer is, according to its director Catherine Breillat, “the synthesis of all (her) work”, as it tackles “the themes of lies and moralism that are dear to her heart”. As usual, the director takes her time to establish her characters and launch the plot. It’s all about rhythm, and here the meeting between Anne and Théo is perfectly timed to lend credibility to an unlikely love that will become obsessive, on the verge of destroying Anne’s new family and her career as a lawyer.
