The Embassy of the Dominican Republic has urged the large community of Dominicans established in Spain to attend the election of the President of the Republic and of deputies representing the diaspora in the elections that will take place on Sunday 19 May.
A total of 109,557 Dominican citizens are registered to vote in around a hundred precincts in the main Spanish cities, 80 percent concentrated in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
In Madrid, 48,240 are registered to vote in 56 precincts, which house 137 polling stations. In Barcelona there are 30,814, in 17 precincts and 56 polling stations, and in Valencia 6,269 voters in 7 precincts, which house 14 polling stations.
The entire set-up has been carried out by the staff of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the autonomous body responsible for the electoral processes in the Dominican nation and the vote abroad, which totals 870,000, of which 149,397 are located in Europe, and elect 2 of the 5 deputies who represent the Dominican diaspora. The total number of Dominican voters is 8,145,548.
Voting in Spain will begin at 8:00 am and will conclude at 6:00 pm, when the results will be tallied. The results will be published immediately.
Ambassador Juan Bolívar Díaz expressed “the commitment of all diplomatic and consular personnel in Spain to encourage Dominicans to vote, as a mechanism for strengthening democratic institutions”.
Dominican elections have been held normally and with a plurality of voters for many years. This time there are 9 presidential candidates. There are also 32 senators and a total of 180 deputies to be elected. The municipal elections were held on 18 February. Those elected next Sunday will take office on 16 August.
