The Sudanese and Qatari production Morirás a los veinte (You Will Die at Twenty), directed in 2019 by Amjad Abu Alala, will be screened this evening at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Casa Árabe in Madrid. Free admission until the auditorium’s capacity is reached. Screening in original version with Spanish subtitles (VOSE).
As part of the activities dedicated to the Sudan Country Focus, Casa Árabe is organising the screening of this film, the first film from Sudan to be submitted to an Oscar competition in 2021.
The plot resembles a fable and is based on a story by the Sudanese writer Hammour Ziada. A Sufi mystic in a Sudanese village in the state of Gezira, near the Nile River, predicts that Muzamil, a newborn boy, will die when he turns twenty. During his early years, Muzamil grows up like other children, but is more anxious about his future.
As a teenager, he meets Suleiman, a marginalised member of the community, who has returned from years abroad. Suleiman owns a film projector and shows it to Muzamil at his home, introducing him to an unfamiliar world. What will happen when the young man reaches his second decade of life?
