From 8 to 12 May, the Teatro Bellas Artes in Madrid presents the play Oedipus, based on the text by Sophocles and directed by Carlos Martín and starring himself alongside Félix Martín, Irene Alquezar and Chavi Bruna, among others.
The story of Oedipus and Iocasta is a universal story that seduces and moves because it identifies the spectator with his fragility, with his daring, with his ignorance. It makes us reflect on the essential questions to which there are still no answers: are we masters of our destiny? Who or what intervenes in our lives? Are the events that happen to us caused by our actions, by chance or by divine whim? Oedipus and Jocasta are a mirror in which to look at themselves: helpless beings, unaware of the consequences of their actions, convinced that they possess the true look.
The starting point is an ancestral, rural society, with a simple social structure, he and she rule, a people with their own voice, shepherds, messengers, soothsayers. The music takes us to that telluric world of voices, percussion, melodies that come from the earth, from the roots. The stage is a tiered agora presided over by the main entrance, which leads to the core of power, of the family, of mystery.
