The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, reiterated yesterday to King Abdullah of Jordan; to the Egyptian president, Abdelfatah Al-Sisi; and to the leader of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmud Abbas, Spain’s willingness to recognize Palestine as a State.

Sánchez spoke by telephone with the three leaders about the situation in the Middle East, within the round of contact that he has been maintaining with the main actors in the area, as well as with those of other European countries, to promote a diplomatic solution that offers a horizon of peace, security and prosperity to the region, according to Executive sources.

The President of the Government is emphasizing in all his conversations and in his public appearances that the solution to the conflict can only come from the coexistence of two States, Israel and Palestine.

Hence, he announced that Spain will recognize Palestine, a recognition that he reaffirmed yesterday in his conversations with the leaders of Jordan, Egypt and Palestine, according to Sánchez in two messages on the social network X.

Government sources specified that the succession of calls this Monday does not mean that the decision on this recognition will be made in today’s Council of Ministers.

Sánchez’s only public commitment is that this recognition becomes a reality before the end of this semester, but after Spain showed last week before the UN Security Council, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares , which is willing to do so as well as support Palestine becoming a full member of the UN, government sources told Efe that the decision can be taken at any time.

In addition to ratifying in his three conversations yesterday that there will be this recognition and support for Palestine in the UN, in his message after speaking with the Jordanian king, Sánchez explained that he reiterated his support in the turbulent regional context.

“Jordan’s efforts in favor of peace and stability are worthy of praise, as is its leadership in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza,” he added before insisting on the need to work together to offer a political horizon of peace and security in the region.

After his conversation with Al-Sisi, he stressed that he also expressed his gratitude for his work in attempting a ceasefire and the release of the hostages. He conveyed to Abbas his “firm support and solidarity in the face of the dramatic situation that the Palestinian people are going through.”

“The path to peace and security in the Middle East passes through the two-state solution and the mutual recognition of Israel and Palestine,” he said.

The President of the Government had already met with his three interlocutors this Monday in Amman, Cairo and Ramallah, respectively, in the series of trips that he has made in recent months to analyze the situation in the Middle East.
