Fundación Alternativas publishes the document Desinformación y censura en conflictos internacionales. Ukraine and Gaza, written by Jorge Tuñón, Rocío Sánchez del Vas and Íñigo Sáez de Ugarte, coordinated and edited by Vicente Palacio.
The starting point of this working paper is the realisation that disinformation, propaganda and censorship in armed conflicts represent a vital threat to our democracies. Both threaten the right of citizens to obtain truthful information, which is the key to liberal democracies. For Spain and the European Union, which are facing two major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, timely and accurate information should be the basis of a healthy democracy and also of a foreign policy that is accountable to citizens.
The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, to take critical stock of legislative responses to disinformation at the European level. Second, to review the most relevant aspects of the two conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. And thirdly, to launch reflections and some proposals for better combating disinformation, propaganda and censorship as far as possible, in the knowledge that in this way we will be able to achieve partial, albeit significant, successes.
The authors of the book, Jorge Tuñón, Jean Monnet Professor “ad personam” and lecturer at the Carlos III University of Madrid; Rocío Sánchez del Vas, lecturer and pre-doctoral researcher, Carlos III University of Madrid, and Íñigo Sáenz de Ugarte, parliamentary correspondent and deputy director of elDiario.es, will take part in the presentation. The event can be followed on the Youtube channel of the Fundación Alternativas.
