This evening at 8:00 p.m., Casa Árabe presents the dramatised lecture Sudan, the Nubian kingdom: theatre and war, led by artist Marco Magoa, who will be accompanied on stage by actresses Celeste González and Mayra Cuenca, and with the live performance of Sudanese musician Wafir S. Gibril (in the photo). Free admission until full capacity is reached. The event will be held in Spanish.
From 2020 to 2022, the artist Marco Magoa premiered four of his plays in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, with the participation of more than fifty local artists and the support of the Spanish Embassy and AECID. His latest performance in Sudan, Kandake Amanirenas, premiered in November 2022, tells of the war that the Nubian queen Amanirenas waged for five years against the Roman army, at the time of Emperor Augustus, to defend her kingdom, finally getting the Romans to sign a peace treaty. On 15 April 2023, just a few months after the premiere, war broke out in Sudan.
The dramatised conference is intended as a tribute to the Sudanese people and the artists who participated in these four performances. During the conference, several scenes from the performance will be interpreted in Spanish and short videos and images of the performances, daily life in Khartoum during rehearsals over the three years, as well as promotional photographs taken in local markets, on the banks of the Nile, and in pyramids and temples in the kingdom of Kush; the land of the black pharaohs.
Marco Magoa is an actor, playwright, director and theatre producer with an extensive international career. He is currently preparing his next project, which will premiere in 2024 in Algeria with the support of the Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Embassy in Algiers thanks to AECID‘s ACERCA Programme.
