The Fundación Excelentia pays tribute to the maestro Joaquín Rodrigo on the 85th anniversary of the composition of his most universal work, the Concierto de Aranjuez. The event will take place on Wednesday 17 April at 19.30 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.
Two days after the outbreak of the Second World War, Joaquín Rodrigo, together with his wife (the Turkish pianist Victoria Kamhi), cross the French-Spanish border back to their country. After a difficult period in France due to personal problems (lack of work and economic hardship, as well as the loss of a baby about to be born in 1939) in the midst of the instability caused by the Civil War in Spain and the pre-war atmosphere of World War II in Europe, the Rodrigo’s cross the border with just a few suitcases in their hands, but a treasure inside: the manuscript of his most universal work, the Concierto de Aranjuez, composed in Paris, at 156 Rue Saint-Jacques, in 1939.
The concert will be accompanied by Maurice Ravel ‘s Bolero and La Valse, and Manuel de Falla ‘s Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and will be performed by the Orquesta Clásica Santa Cecilia, the guitar and piano virtuosos Alejandro Hurtado (in the photo) and Andrés Barrios, and conducted by Kynan Johns.
