The play El monstruo de los jardines (The Monster of the Gardens), by Calderón de la Barca, in a production by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, will be performed at the Teatro de la Comedia (Calle del Príncipe, 14) until the 26th of May.
The Monster of the Gardens is inspired by the episode of Achilles in Sciros, when he is hidden by his mother, the nymph Thetis, in the court of King Licomedes, disguised as a woman so that the prophecy of his death in Troy is not fulfilled.
A mythological comedy by Calderón de la Barca, never before performed by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, which represents the pinnacle of Baroque theatre, fusing poetry, music and dance, and all this with a staging in keeping with a modern aesthetic. The marvellous verses contained in this work make it one of the masterpieces of one of the most distinguished Baroque writers of the Golden Age, especially for his theatre.
