The island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. has been selected to host, in 2025, a European-wide simulation on volcanic risks.

Specifically, Tenerife has been selected for the EU Modex project (EU Civil Protection Mechanism), which seeks to provide an international response to all types of disasters, such as floods, fires, avalanches or seismic movements.

The Cabildo of Tenerife will be in charge of this cross-border exercise, whose purpose will be to “check the professional response of the international group on the island in the face of a highly intense volcanic episode.”

The island director of Security and Emergencies, Iván Martín, collaborated in the activities and development of the EU Modex exercises for the EU Civil Protection that were held in Bucharest (Romania). “The holding of an exercise linked to Modex is a commitment to the future for Tenerife, since the security consortium that makes up the different countries will bring their experiences, as well as experts and technicians in emergencies and security and specialists in different subjects such as geologists, volcanologists, engineers and meteorologists. All this information will be used to face future risks that are generated,” he declared.

Martín assures that the EU Modex initiative reinforces the mobilization of response teams and provides the necessary resources in case a country has to face an emergency. The project allows sharing experiences and knowledge to improve the response to critical situations, such as natural disasters or health crises.

The next edition of the EU Modex exercises will have as reference the forest fire drill in the town of Wicklow, Ireland.
