Following its success in 2023, Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion BWV 244 returns to the Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid on Monday 25 March, as part of an international tour with dates in Paris, Budapest, Zurich and Seoul, among others.
This is a unique opportunity to see the prestigious countertenor Philippe Jaroussky in action together with the prestigious Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (Freiburger Barockorchester); an infallible tandem that will perform what is probably the best version of the St. Matthew Passion to be heard live in Spain in 2024.
The performances will be conducted by Francesco Corti, and the acclaimed Swiss choir Zürcher Sing-Akademie completes the line-up for a concert that promises to be the event of this Holy Week.
Extremely moving and spiritual, The Passion according to St. Matthew, BWV 244 presents the passion and death of Christ through a composition that was highly innovative for its time, which led to it being rejected by most representatives of the bourgeoisie at the time and forgotten for some years. As always happens with great creations, time has given Bach’s genius its rightful place, and today it is one of the most iconic pieces of classical music, as well as one of the German composer’s most famous works.
