Yesterday, the Council of Ministers appointed Alejandro Abellán as ambassador of Spain to Peru, as The Diplomat had anticipated.

Alejandro Abellán, who will replace Alejandro Alvargonzález in Lima, has a degree in Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid and entered the diplomatic career since 1991. His career began in the General Directorate of International Economic Relations. He has been stationed at the Spanish Embassy in El Salvador, at the Permanent Representation before the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and at the Permanent Representation before the European Union in Brussels.

Between 2008 and 2017 he assumed responsibilities as director general within the Secretariat of State for the European Union. Specifically, between 2008 and 2010 he was general director of Coordination of the Internal Market and other Community Policies and from that year until 2017 he served as general director of General Affairs and Policies of the EU.

In April 2017 he was appointed ambassador to the Dominican Republic, a position he assumed until August 2021, and in January 2022 he returned to serve as general director of Coordination of the Internal Market and other Community Policies.

Precisely, yesterday the Council of Ministers also named his successor in that last position, Antonio Rodríguez de Liévana. Member of the Diplomatic Service since 2007, he held, since March 2021, the position of deputy director general of International Relations and Community Affairs in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Additionally, in Madrid he worked as deputy director of the Office of the Secretary General for the European Union during the preparation of the Spanish presidency of 2010, head of service in the General Directorate of the Internal Market and head of area in the General Subdirectorate of Community Legal Affairs.

Abroad, he was a liaison diplomat at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the trio of presidencies 2010-2011, and worked at the European External Action Service as regional thematic officer on drug and organized crime issues for Latin America. He has also been consul general in Oran (Algeria) and first secretary at the Spanish Embassy in Senegal.
