Next Sunday 24th March at 11.30 am, the Fundación Excelentia presents a performance of Mozart‘s Requiem in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.
The Santa Cecilia Classical Orchestra will be in charge of performing this impressive piece of music, together with the Excelentia Vocal Ensemble, made up of soprano Ekaterina Sadovnikova, mezzo Martina Mikelic, tenor Victor Sordo and bass David Cervera.
In addition to the music of the Salzburg-born genius, the concert programme will include Mendelssohn ‘s The Hebrides Overture and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5.
The Requiem Mass in D minor K. 626 is the last work Mozart composed and probably one of the most important in his entire catalogue, not only because of its musical quality but also because of the legend associated with it.
Mozart was going through a very difficult time: his health was failing and he was very depressed since the death of his father and, as a result of this, almost obsessed with his own death, so that everything surrounding this secret commission even frightened him… or so legend has it, at least, so the legend goes.
What is certain is that the Count was unable to fulfil his commission, as Mozart’s illness was at a very advanced stage and the young composer died before seeing his great work completed. He only managed to compose the first few bars of the Lacrimosa, and it was his pupil Süssmayr who completed the instrumentation (according to Mozart’s score) and the missing parts.
