The Diplomat
On the occasion of Women’s History Month, which the United States celebrates in March, the US Embassy has installed the work Letter from Home (Suffrage), by Spanish-American artist Elena del Rivero, on its façade.
The work, which pays homage to women’s suffrage in the United States, is part of the Home Address project , begun in 2020 to commemorate the centenary of the 19th Amendment, which legislated women’s suffrage in the United States and was officially adopted in August 1920.
The Home Address project consists of the installation of 19 of these flag-like works, inspired by the design of a tea towel, in institutions in the United States and now in Madrid.
Del Rivero’s work, known for blurring the boundaries between different forms of expression (writing, painting, sewing, drawing), in this case brings the everyday fabrics of the kitchen, often ignored or undervalued, into the public sphere to provoke a dialogue about aesthetics and citizenship. Del Rivero transforms the everyday to underline the importance of political and artistic representation. The project pays homage to the women who fought tirelessly for their rights and is an acknowledgement of the current challenges to achieving full universal suffrage. The Spanish-American artist invites us to reflect on the fundamental role of women’s suffrage in shaping our democracies, to celebrate the progress made and to acknowledge the road ahead.
