On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of its original publication in English, the Instituto Cervantes (Calle Alcalá, 49) presents this evening at 7 p.m. a meeting on the work La Civilicazión de España (The Civilisation of Spain), by John Brade Trend.
Published in 1944 and in Argentina in 1955, this work is the first book by J.B. Trend (1887-1958) to be published in Spain. Few Hispanists and musicologists were in a better position to tackle in so few pages an interpretative synthesis of Spain as J.B. Trend, the first professor of Spanish at Cambridge. The book covers the period from the Phoenicians in 1104 BC to the Civil War. The titles of some of the chapters give an idea of the scope of the book: The Muslim Provinces, The Christian Kingdoms, Monarchy and Empire, Romantic Spain and Modern Spain.
Trend is the author of numerous books on Spain, including studies on Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla (the first monograph published on the composer from Cádiz). Few, if any, English writers of the first half of the 20th century have explained the nature of Spain and its culture better than this Hispanist. It combines rigorous documentation, exemplary objectivity and the utmost critical acuity.
