The Spanish Government yesterday “strongly” condemned the decision of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Government to approve the expansion of Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank and called on Israel “to reverse the measure.”
“The settlements are contrary to International Law, they undermine efforts to make the two-state solution a reality and are an obstacle to peace,” the Executive added. The statement comes at a delicate moment in bilateral relations between Spain and Israel due to the Pedro Sánchez Government’s rejection of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, announced last Monday before the Joint Commission for the European Union of the Congress of Deputies that the Spanish Government has “initiated the procedures to impose sanctions on a first group of twelve violent settlers from West Bank”, just as countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have done and in view of the inability of the EU to reach an agreement in this regard due to Hungary’s blockade.
