The European People’s Party (EPP) yesterday from Bucarest rejected the amnesty law promoted by the Spanish Government, which it said was “written by those who are going to benefit from it.” In addition, it asked the European Commission to make a ” close scrutiny” of the standard.
The EPP Congress held in the Romanian capital approved a resolution on the Rule of Law in the European Union, promoted by the delegation of the Spanish Popular Party, which attends the meeting with its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo at the head.
This text warns that the amnesty “offers impunity for crimes related to the secessionist movement, considered contrary to the rule of law and rejected by European institutions.”
“This law, and the process that led to its adoption, undermines judicial independence by proposing a parliamentary review of judges’ decisions and has been unanimously criticized by the Spanish judiciary,” notes the resolution, approved the day before. that today the new text of the law is known with Junts.
The resolution also indicates that amnesty will be granted for crimes “relevant at the European level”, such as embezzlement or terrorism, and that the law could mean the closure of the investigation into Russia’s “interference” in the ‘procés’.
“As a party committed to the rule of law in line with European values, we cannot ignore actions that threaten fundamental legal principles and the separation of powers. We call for close scrutiny of the amnesty law by the European Commission,” it adds.
Before the vote on the resolution, the deputy secretary of Institutional Action of the PP, Esteban González Pons, assured that moving forward with this text “allows us to affirm at this moment” that a majority of the EU governments, those chaired by the EPP, support the Spanish position against the amnesty law and “against the corruption that seems institutionalized in the Government of Pedro Sánchez.”
