The plenary session of the European Parliament yesterday requested an “independent evaluation” of the Amnesty Law that the PSOE agreed with ERC and Junts and demanded that the Spanish Government have “total transparency” when it comes to offering the necessary information to the European institutions.
In its assessment of the European Commission’s 2023 Rule of Law report, Parliament notes concrete changes, while highlighting persistent threats to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, as well as problems or incidents specific in several EU Member States.
The text was supported by 374 MEPs, 113 voted against and 45 abstained.
As regards Spain, the European Parliament “takes note” of the future adoption of an amnesty law and refers to the “questions, opinions and concerns expressed by various interested parties”, including associations of judges, prosecutors, lawyers and academics, civil society and the general public.
In the opinion of the MEPs, “this deserves an independent evaluation.” The plenary session asks the Spanish Government, in this sense, to offer “total transparency” to the European institutions regarding this amnesty law. The MEPs also regret the prolonged situation of blockade of the Council of the Judiciary.
