The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, plans to make his first visit to Spain next week, since he took office in August of last year, as The Diplomat learned from diplomatic sources.
Santiago Peña, a young economist who won the last elections held in Paraguay, at the head of the Colorado Party, will be the main speaker at the Mobile World Congress, which will take place in Barcelona from February 26 to 29.
The Paraguayan president will be in the Catalan capital on the 27th and, subsequently, he will travel to Madrid, where he will be on the 28th and 29th, and where he will be received by His Majesty the King, with whom he already had the opportunity to talk when Don Felipe went to Asunción to represent Spain at his inauguration.
Likewise, Peña’s agenda includes a meeting with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in which they will have the opportunity to address both bilateral relations and the negotiations of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, since Paraguay assumed the rotating presidency of the American bloc last December.
The Paraguayan president will also participate in a meeting with Spanish businessmen, who have interests in Paraguay or who could have them, both to increase investments and commercial exchanges.
In fact, recently the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Javier Giménez, who will accompany Peña on his visit, received in Asunción representatives of the Spanish-Paraguayan Chamber of Commerce and the Spanish Embassy in Paraguay in Asunción to evaluate existing commercial relations. At the meeting, the interest of Spanish businessmen in being present in sectors such as energy, construction, real estate development and transportation was highlighted.
Spain and Paraguay are negotiating an agreement to avoid double taxation and streamline trade between both nations.
