The Diplomat
The Georgian ambassador to Spain, Ilia Giorgadze, ended his mission in our country a few days ago and returned to Tbilisi, as The Diplomat learned.
Ilia Giorgadze has remained in Madrid for nearly six years, since he delivered his Letters of Credence to the King in June 2018, after filling the vacancy left at the head of the Georgian Embassy by Zurab Pololikashvili, appointed secretary general of the World Organization. Tourism (UNWTO), today UN Tourism.
During Giorgadze’s stay in Madrid, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, received, in May 2021, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, at La Moncloa, who visited our country on the occasion of the inauguration of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR).
Georgia opened an Embassy in Spain in 2005, but our country has not yet established an Embassy in Tbilisi, despite the fact that, on numerous occasions, different Foreign Ministers assured that it would be created soon. In June 2019, the Government opened a diplomatic branch in Georgia and since then there have been repeated promises from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it would become an Embassy. However, this conversion has not yet occurred and the diplomatic antenna remains in Tbilisi, headed by a diplomat, who depends on the Spanish Embassy in Turkey.
