The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has shown his support for the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, following the search and arrest order ordered against her by the Russian Government of Vladimir Putin.
The Russian Federation accuses her of violently rebelling against “memory history” and showing her support for Ukraine. According to the database of the Russian Ministry of the Interior, in addition to Kallas, the order has also been declared against officials and deputies of Latvia and Lithuania, including the Lithuanian Minister of Culture, Simonas Kairys, and the Latvian Minister of Agriculture, Armands Krause. ; of Finance, Arvils Ašeradens; and Justice, Inese Libina Egnere.
In a message through the social network X, Sánchez has defended the courage of Estonia and expressed his support for Kaja Kallas: “Putin’s action is another proof of your courage and Estonia’s leadership in the defense of democracy and freedom,” he declared. “The Spanish people and Europe support you,” he added.
Following the event, Kallas issued the following statement: “Russia may believe that issuing a fictitious arrest warrant will silence Estonia. I refuse to be silenced: I will continue to openly support Ukraine and advocate for strengthening European defences.”
Kallas stated that the EU’s support for Ukraine harms Russia: “I have always said that Russia’s tools have not changed” because, “throughout history, Russia has hidden its repressions behind so-called law enforcement agencies,” said Kallas, recalling her own family history.
Pedro Sánchez was received by Kaja Kallas in July 2021 (more than half a year before the Russian invasion of Ukraine), as part of a tour of the Baltic countries. During his appearance before the media in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, the President of the Government assured that “the Baltic countries and Estonia have our full solidarity and support with respect to Russia.”
