The Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in Spain, in collaboration with the Mercat de Les Flors in Barcelona, present the Panorama Taiwan project, which from November 2023 offers Barcelona a sample of contemporary dance creation from Taiwan.
Panorama Taiwan is the result of a professional relationship and joint work in the performing arts between the National Theatre and Concert Hall of Taipei (Taiwan) and the Mercat de Les Flors in Barcelona, which brings to the public the richness and vitality of contemporary dance in Taiwan through the creations of the most outstanding Taiwanese choreographers and dancers.
On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February, the public will be able to enjoy a double performance of Taiwanese dance. To open the evening, Shimmering Production presents the choreography Beings, by director Wang Yeu-Kwn (at 6 p.m.), with a duet of dancers who will envelop the audience in a creation of human interaction. Followed by Floating Flowers, by choreographer Po-Cheng Tsai (at 7pm), from the B Dance company, which pays special tribute to the traditions of Taiwan.
Inspired by the Chinese character “人” (meaning person), Beings explores the links between the two strokes of calligraphy, between the two dancers who have an intimate bond, between rice paper and ink. This work on human interaction deeply connects the two performers in a moving duet, with a feeling of serene attentiveness, culminating in an unexpected twist. An intimate, beautiful performance, in which light and music give relevance to the poetry of this creation.
Floating Flowers is inspired by a traditional Taiwanese religious celebration that takes place during the Ghost Festival, one of the most beautiful and popular Buddhist ceremonies in the country. Thus, the choreographer Po-Cheng Tsai pays homage to his father, with whom he used to go to these ceremonies, which are a cult of the dead. With a mysterious poetics, dancers of great technical excellence compose a choreography of great beauty.
