The meeting between Félix Bolaños and Esteban González Pons, with the mediation of the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, to negotiate the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary, which was due to take place today, has been delayed until the 19th, due to the fact that the PP negotiator is ill with swine flu.
The Minister of Justice and the PP’s Deputy Secretary for Institutional Action were scheduled to meet this morning in Brussels with the mediation of Reynders, in what was to be their second meeting in the EU capital in relation to the aforementioned issue. The previous meeting took place on 31 January, also in the presence of Reynders, who, at the end of that meeting, assured that he had achieved a “clear commitment” from the minister and the leader of the PP for the renewal of the Council of the Judiciary.
For his part, Bolaños declared that day that the meeting had been “cordial and constructive” and that the two parties had gotten “to work” so that this time it would be “the final one.” González Pons, on the other hand, expressed little enthusiasm after the meeting and was even “very pessimistic”, although he clarified that the fact that a new meeting was called allowed us to consider that progress had been made. “The first thing that the Government of Pedro Sánchez sacrifices in its negotiations is usually the independence of the judiciary,” he stated.
