The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, yesterday awarded the Grand Cross of Military Merit with a white badge to the former ambassador of Spain in Latvia Susana Cámara; and to the former presidents of the Defense Commission in the Congress of Deputies, José Ignacio Echániz; and in the Senate Mercedes Berenguer.
The distinctions have been awarded to them for their contribution from the diplomatic and political sphere to national defense and their commitment to the Constitution “and, above all, to the values that our Armed Forces represent,” as the minister indicated when presenting them with the awards.
Regarding Susana Cámara, who headed the diplomatic representation in Riga between 2018 and 2022, Margarita Robles thanked her for her work with the nine Spanish contingents in the NATO deterrence mission eFP (enhanced Forward Presence) with whom she coincided during her mandate, and addressing her, he said: “You were not only the ambassador of Spain, but the ambassador of our troops.”
The former ambassador, for her part, highlighted “the professional, but also human qualities of the Spanish military, who – she said – have earned the appreciation, recognition and respect of the authorities and all Latvian citizens.”
The ceremony, which was held at the Army Headquarters, was attended by the Chief of the Defense Staff, Admiral General Teodoro López Calderón, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Army General Amador Enseñat.
