From 11 to 25 February, on the occasion of Teatro del Barrio’s tenth anniversary, this stage at calle Zurita, 20 in Madrid is bringing back the first play directed by Juan Mayorga, La lengua en pedazos, inspired by El libro de la vida, de Teresa de Jesús.
In these three unique performances, the director reunites with the performers Clara Sanchis and Daniel Albaladejo to imagine a new staging of the play.
La lengua en pedazos was the play with which Juan Mayorga received the Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática. The play is based on texts by the author himself and extracts from El libro de la Vida, and poses a diatribe, or even a combat, between this woman and a member of the Holy Inquisition.
The play takes place in the kitchen of the convent of San José, the first of the foundations Teresa created in an exercise of rebellion and together with twelve fellow nuns, where she decides to return to primitive Christianity, taking a vow of poverty and living on alms. The kitchen is an important space for Teresa, to whom the saying “God also walks among pots and pans” is attributed. And it is here that the reforming woman fights with a man of the Church, an Inquisitor, whose aim is the closure of San José and Teresa’s return to Carmelite orthodoxy. It was a theological battle, but also a political and personal one. To the arguments and threats of the Inquisitor, Teresa opposes her faith and her character. If she affirms that God appears to her and speaks to her, her opponent tries to discredit these visions and the mission based on them as an illusion. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
