The vice president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, requested yesterday in the plenary session of the European Parliament that the possible links between Catalan secessionist politicians and the Government of Vladimir Putin in Russia be investigated.
Margaritis Schinas warned of growing Russian interference to destabilize European democracy. “It is the duty of this house to investigate who did what, under what conditions to play the Moscow game,” said the head of the Protection of the European Way of Life during a debate in the European Parliament focused on Russian interference in democratic processes in Europe. accompanied by a resolution that will be voted on this Thursday.
Schinas made express mention of the ties of Catalan secessionism with Russian officials, echoing information about “close and regular contacts”, including visits by officials between 2017 and 2020.
The community vice president added this case to that of the Latvian MEP, Tatjana Zdanoka, accused of collaborating for two decades with the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia. Precisely this case sparked debate in Strasbourg after the revelations of a journalistic investigation that indicated that she worked for Russian Intelligence. During the debate, Zdanoka herself took the floor and rejected the accusations, stating that she is “an agent in favor of peace, against fascism and in favor of a united Europe.”
