The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, received yesterday in La Moncloa the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, before whom he highlighted the progress made by his country during the recent Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU in its accession process to the European Union.

During the meeting, the President of the Government assured that Albania has the potential to be “at the forefront” of the enlargement process and become a model for the other candidate countries. “Let me congratulate you on the progress your country has made in the last year on its path towards the EU,” he declared.

Likewise, Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to the enlargement of the EU to the Western Balkans, as made clear at the informal meeting of the European Council held in Granada last October.

Pedro Sánchez and Edi Rama also talked about the development of the tourism sector in Albania, the reason for the Albanian Prime Minister’s visit to Spain within the framework of Fitur 2024. Specifically, the two leaders addressed the investment opportunities that Albania offers as an important tourist destination. and the increase in arrivals of Spanish tourists to the country. In this framework, the President of the Government and the Prime Minister of Albania committed to cooperate in tourism matters.

Likewise, Sánchez and Rama reviewed some of the projects that are being carried out in Albania in cultural and educational matters, and in which Spain collaborates, such as the opening of a UNED campus in Gjirokastër, a World Heritage Site, which constitutes Albania’s commitment to the internationalization of the educational sector and the retention of talent.

They also addressed the creation of a campus of the College of Europe in Tirana, to which Spain will contribute with three scholarships, another project that, in the words of the President of the Government, represents a great advance both for the retention of talent and for the accession process. from Albania to the EU.
