Spain and a broad alliance of Member States have sent a joint letter to the European Commission for an ambitious EU Climate Target for 2040.
Under the title Joint call for an ambitious climate target for the EU by 2040, the governments of Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal, through their Environment Ministers, have sent a letter to the European Commission requesting that the objectives of the European Union be expanded in the fight against climate change with a horizon of 2040. In the letter, the ministers of these eleven EU States point out that “the need for more ambitious action in the fight against climate change has never been more necessary” and mention the 2023 global warming figures with record numbers that have unleashed devastating tragedies.
Therefore, they ask the European Commission that in view of the situation “we strongly encourage the European Commission to recommend an ambitious climate goal for 2040 in its next communication. We must guarantee the application of the “Fit for 55″ legislative package,” they point out. in the letter the governments.
