On Wednesday 7 February at 8 p.m., the Instituto Francés of Madrid presents the dance performance Phénix, by Mourad Merzouki. Registration is required by clicking here.
Presented for the first time in 2022, this show is the result of an unexpected and unique encounter between the viola da gamba and dance, in which four dancers enter into dialogue with this stringed instrument that was very popular in the 17th century. Accompanied by additional electronic music, this piece, choreographed by Mourad Merzouki, shifts registers, eras and codes between musicians and dancers.
Following the choreographer’s approach of opening up and confronting different aesthetics, the show brings together opposing disciplines to create a light and singular form. Despite the three centuries that separate the viola da gamba from the invention of hip-hop, on stage the two become one, as the sensitivity of the instrument merges with the energy of dance. In an intimate atmosphere, the artists combine their worlds to present an original piece, sublimated by their alchemy!
