The Diplomat
The Embassy of the Dominican Republic celebrated on Friday the traditional tribute to Juan Pablo Duarte, Father of the Homeland of the Dominican Republic, in front of the bust erected in the Paseo de Camoens in Madrid, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 211th anniversary of his birth.
The Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Kingdom of Spain, Juan Bolívar Díaz, the Consul General in Madrid, Miguel Vásquez Peña, the President of the Instituto Duartiano – Madrid branch, Jeanette Alfau, and the Director of the Instituto de Dominicanos y Dominicanas en el Exterior (INDEX), Leonardo Marrero were the organisers of the event.
During their speeches they all highlighted Duarte’s life, work and thought. Ambassador Díaz referred to his trajectory as a patriot. He pointed out that “he was the founder of the La Trinitaria society and the main ideologue of independence, a cause for which he fought all his life”. For his part, Consul Miguel Vásquez underlined “the inspiring influence of his thought on young people” and urged them to emulate him. Jeanette Alfau recalled that Duarte said “let us work for and for the homeland, which is to work for our children and for ourselves”.
The Dominican authorities, accompanied by the Minister Counsellor of the Embassy, Ramón Burgos and the Defence Attaché, Anyoly Ceballos, placed two floral offerings in front of the bust of the patrician, one of them from the Madrid City Council.
Among those present at this event were the ambassador consort of the Dominican Embassy to the Kingdom of Spain, Ms. Ada Wiscovitch Carlo; members of the diplomatic and consular corps and military attachés accredited in Spain; the Dominican consuls in Valencia, Gloria Guevara, in Seville, Cesar Enrique Gomez and in Hamburg, Carlos Nunez, the overseas deputy Julio Cesar Lopez and members of the Dominican community.
This activity marks the beginning of the month of the Fatherland, for which the Embassy of the Dominican Republic is organising various activities in commemoration of the 180th Anniversary of National Independence.
