The Diplomat
Romania’s ambassador to Spain, George Bologan, will soon leave his post after being recalled to Bucharest by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to take up a senior post in that country.
Bologan, who arrived in Madrid in April 2022 after serving as ambassador to Italy, will be foreign policy advisor to President Iohannis or state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since the beginning of his stay in Spain, George Bologan has been very active, especially in trying to close a dual nationality agreement between the two countries, which is one of Romania’s aspirations and from which more than one million Romanians living in Spain could benefit.
The agreement, of which some technical details have yet to be finalised, is expected to be signed during the first few months of this year, during a visit by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to Romania. After France and Portugal, Romania will be the third European country with which a dual nationality agreement will be signed.
In addition, the Romanian ambassador contributed to the fact that during the six months of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, which ended on 31 December last year, efforts were made to lift Austria’s veto on the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area of free movement, which will finally come into effect on 31 March.
