Translation and Interpreting in the Diplomatic and Consular Sphere

This evening at 7 p.m., Casa Árabe is presenting its seventh conference in the Aula Árabe Universitaria 5 series, Translation and Interpreting in the Diplomatic and Consular Sphere, given by Abdelali Oamroni, an Arabic translator and interpreter, which can be seen live on Casa Árabe’s YouTube channel. Free admission until full capacity is reached. The event will be held in Spanish.

Translation and diplomacy are two very ancient activities. As old as the very existence of human groups. Both were born as a result of interaction and contact between societies. They have evolved and developed throughout history to become two established and essential practices in international relations.

Spain maintains diplomatic relations with several Arab countries where it has embassies and consulates that serve as an instrument of its foreign action. Seventeen Arab countries, plus the League of Arab States, have diplomatic and consular representations in Spain.

In this talk, Abdelali Oamroni, who holds a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Malaga, will shed light on the written and oral translation activity carried out in these missions within the framework of their interaction with the institutions of the host country. This conference is therefore dedicated to the figure of the translator and interpreter who works in this field, where the exercise of this profession entails a high degree of responsibility and sensitivity. It is not just a matter of translating words, but of understanding the nuances and having a deep knowledge of the cultural and political contexts of the sending and receiving countries in order to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations.

Among other aspects, the usual form of recruitment, the requirements and qualifications required, the professional category, the fields of action and the tasks entrusted will be identified. In this sense, we will focus on diplomatic and consular correspondence, and we will offer a practical approach to the translation of this type of document in the Spanish-Arabic binomial. To this end, the most commonly used documents (the Note Verbale, the Signed Note, the Collective Note, the Personal Letter, Pro-Memorial, Memorandum, etc.) will be taken as a reference to describe, from a translatological approach, the structure and relevant features of these communications in Spanish and Arabic, emphasising the formality of the style (formulas of treatment, greetings, closing formulas, etc.).

The session will be attended by Bianca Vitalaru, Arabic and Quality Coordinator of the TISP Master’s Degree, who will introduce the speaker and the subject within the framework of the Master’s Degree, and Mohana Sultan, Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting and Multilingual Communication at the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, who will make an initial commentary/reaction to the lecture. Moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe’s Training and Economics Coordinator.
